David Moyes faces make or break period ahead of Leeds United clash as pressure builds

Several months ago, West Ham United were competing in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals. Fast forward to the start of 2023 and the Hammers are facing the daunting prospect of a relegation dogfight.

West Ham - Leeds' next opponents in the Premier League - have lost five straight games for the first time since April 2017 under Slaven Bilic, and sit just one point above the relegation zone.

Moyes' second spell at the London Stadium had been a resounding success prior to the current campaign, but their plight under the Scotsman has been rapid.

Only Wolves (10) and Nottingham Forest (11) have scored fewer goals in the Premier League than West Ham's woeful tally of 13. No club has lost more games than the Hammers, with their record of 11 defeats only being matched by bottom place Southampton.

West Ham are standing by Moyes ahead of the clash with Leeds, with the board having given him their support, according to the Mail. However, Moyes is aware that if results don't improve, then he will inevitably face the sack, especially with United, Wolves and Everton coming up in their next three games.

Moyes admitted that he is under pressure following their latest 2-0 defeat at the hands of Brentford at the London Stadium on Thursday. "I don't think it's unfair. In the business we're in if you don't win in five games you're going to be under pressure," Moyes revealed via the Mail.

He added in an interview with BBC Sport: "I don't think anybody likes to be on losing runs and it doesn't get any easier as you get older or more experienced.

"If anything, I think it hurts more because you are desperate to get out of it and get back into a winning habit and that's what we've got got to do."

Moyes is currently the leading favourite to become the next manager to face the sack, with Sky Bet offering odds of 8/11. What is clear is that Moyes is embarking on a make or break period with the Hammers - and it's even possible that defeat at Elland Road on Wednesday night could seal his fate.

The next three games, starting with Leeds, feature clubs currently in the bottom seven, and if the losing run rumbles on, then his spell in the capital looks likely to draw to an end.
