West Ham United manager David Moyes understands why some fans were frustrated not to see strikers Gianluca Scamacca and Michail Antonio play together during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Southampton.
In the stalemate with the Saints at St Mary’s, the Hammers gained momentum after Declan Rice equalised in the 64th minute, just five minutes after the introduction of Said Benrahma led to David Moyes switching formation from 3-4-2-1 to 4-2-3-1.
From going level, West Ham looked the most likely of the two sides to add a third goal in the game, the closest chance coming when Scamacca was played through on goal by Lucas Paqueta, forcing Gavin Bazunu into an important save.

With the Hammers on top, fans got excited when Michail Antonio and Manuel Lanzini came on, with the hope that they would see Scamacca and Antonio play alongside each other for only the second time since Scamacca signed from Sassuolo for £30.5million in the summer.
Instead, Scamacca was taken off and replaced by Antonio, leading to a number of boos from the away end, in the hope that West Ham would play their two strikers together.
“I can understand it,” Moyes said when asked about the boos and why West Ham did not go all out attacking late on. “We were gung-ho, we were just looking at somebody who we thought had run out of steam.
“We got him [Scamacca] further than we’ve got him in any other game, so no problem.”
