David Moyes bemoans West Ham VAR decisions after Europa Conference League draw in Gent

West Ham United manager David Moyes admits he was left frustrated by VAR decisions made during the Hammers’ 1-1 Europa Conference League draw by Belgian side Gent on Thursday night at the Ghelamco Arena.

The Hammers missed the chance to record an 11th straight win in Europe this term as Danny Ings’ first half goal was cancelled out after the interval by Hugo Cuypers in the first leg of their semi-final tie.

VAR was at the heart of the game in both halves. Shortly before Ings’ opener, centre-back Nayef Aguerd saw a goal disallowed by VAR after handling it on its way in the goal.

In second half stoppage time, Gent defender Kamil Piatkowski was shown a straight red card for a challenge on substitute Lucas Paqueta. However, after a VAR check, the red card was rescinded with Piatkowski winning the ball cleanly in the game.

Moyes questioned the use of VAR in the incidents and said that he thought VAR would only be used to analyse clear and obvious errors.

"When you look at the night, you would say there were so many things that went against us," said Moyes.

"Whether they were correct, you hope they were. I thought some of these decisions were only for if it was clear and obvious that they would overturn a referee’s decision, but we have nearly had every decision overturned tonight.

"I didn’t think they [would] intervene unless it was a clear and obvious mistake? We had two or three decisions that looked really difficult to take."
