David Martindale in smirking next Rangers boss response as Livingston gaffer names 'good fit' for Ibrox hot seat

Livingston boss David Martindale laughed off any chance of him taking over from Giovanni van Brockhorst at Rangers - as he threw his backing behind frontrunner and QPR boss Michael Beale.

The Lions are enjoying another impressive Scottish Premiership campaign having surged to fourth spot in the table with the league on hiatus while the World Cup takes centre stage. In contrast, Rangers underachieved under Van Bronckhorst this season and with the Light Blues trailing leaders Celtic by nine points it resulted in the Dutchman being shown the door by the Ibrox board.

Beale is the heavy favourite to land the role with the London-based club insisting they won't stand in their bosses way if he want to leave. Martindale is set to warm-up for the return of league action with a closed door clash with QPR, and it's now up in the air if Beale will be in the opposing dugout for the friendly.

After receiving the Manager of the Month award for November, Martindale was quizzed about the prospect of facing off against against Beale. He told Sky Sports News: "We are still going down to QPR. Whether it's Michael that is there or not. I think it would be a good fit for Rangers, but I've not spoke to Mick.i don't expect to speak to Mick. Time will tell, so they say."

Martindale was then put on the spot about his interest in the vacancy, having been placed among the frontrunners to replace Van Bronckhorst by the bookmakers. He laughed: "It'll not be me, I can tell you that."
