Former Liverpool and England striker David Johnson has passed away at the age of 71.
Johnson won four league titles and three European Cups during his six years at Anfield, having joined for a club record fee of £200k in 1976. He scored 55 times in 148 league games for the Reds - notching 78 times in 213 games in total - despite having come through the ranks initially at Everton, for whom he made his professional debut in 1969 and would rejoin when he left Liverpool in 1982. He holds the distinction of being the first player in history to score for both sides in the Merseyside derby.
Johnson also scored six times in eight games for the Three Lions, representing his country between 1975 and 1980. After playing he was a regular on BBC Radio Merseyside, often working as a match summariser, and also worked as a host in the corporate lounges at Anfield in recent years. Johnson had been ill for some time having been diagnosed with throat cancer in recent years.
