David de Gea nominated for Premier League Player of the Month award

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has been nominated for the Premier League’s Player of the Month award for January.

The 31-year-old has enjoyed a superb season thus far and is among six other players in contention to claim 2022's first league accolade.

Making 22 saves across the month, De Gea was in remarkable form against Brentford and Aston Villa, helping the Reds to victory in both games.

United climbed into the top four in their most recent triumph against West Ham, with De Gea called into action late on to ensure a vital victory.

Despite only keeping five clean sheets this season, the former Atlético Madrid man has rescued Ralf Rangnick's side on more than one occasion, receiving plaudits from players and pundits along the way.

De Gea leads all goalkeepers in terms of saving expected goals (XG), across all of Europe's major five leagues, saving 0.4 goals per game.

He has kept out a staggering 7.5 goals across 19 appearances this season that his team would otherwise have conceded had he not been in between the sticks.

As mentioned, the Reds shot-stopper faces competition for the award, with five other players also nominated.

Jack Harrison of Leeds and West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen have scored four and three goals respectively during January.

City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne and Wolves general Joao Moutinho are also nominated, with Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse rounding up the list this month.
