David de Gea dedicates Man Utd win to late grandma with emotional message

David de Gea paid tribute to his late grandma after Manchester United's 1-0 Premier League win against Leicester on Thursday night.

United were victorious at the King Power Stadium thanks to Jadon Sancho's first-half strike. The result leaves Erik ten Hag's side fifth in the Premier League, six points behind early pacesetters Arsenal. Incidentally, United's next game is against the Gunners on Sunday.

De Gea produced a solid display against the Foxes, denying James Maddison's free kick with a superb stop. The Red Devils have now won three consecutive Premier League games, with their other wins coming against Liverpool and Southampton.

De Gea hadn't spoken publicly about his grandma's passing before Thursday night's game. The Spain international took to social media after the win to post a picture of his crucial save against Maddison and write an emotional message to his late relative.

"This save and the victory is for you grandma," wrote De Gea on Instagram and Twitter. "Keep watching me flying wherever you are."

Several footballers took to Instagram to support De Gea, including current teammates Alejandro Garnacho, Raphael Varane and Casemiro. Former United star Juan Mata and international colleague Kepa Arrizabalaga also paid their respects on Instagram.

De Gea has been on the books at Old Trafford since the summer of 2011 when he arrived from Atletico Madrid. He's made nearly 500 appearances for United, winning seven trophies - including the Premier League title, FA Cup, EFL Cup and Europa League.

United haven't tasted success since 2017 and Ten Hag is aiming to end their drought. "We defended with 11 and we attacked with 11 and also there was a good fighting spirit on the pitch that brings us the score," Ten Hag told BBC Sport after Thursday's game.

"I am very happy for Jadon Sancho. He scored many goals in pre-season, now also he scores against Liverpool and today. He is getting his rewards. But it was a team goal, how we built it up from the back. It was a transition moment, a good pass and finish.

"The defensive skill is the base for winning games. It makes you hard to beat. We have to stick to that. I know we can be better. We were already better than at Southampton. I am sure we will improve on that fact. Pressing also needs room for improvement."

New signing Casemiro started the victory from the bench and is still waiting for his first start. Ten Hag added: "Casemiro has to get used to a different league. He has achieved everything that you can imagine.

"Now he is in a different league and we want to give him the minutes to adapt to that, to his team-mates and the style of football. Sunday [against Arsenal] is a real test for us. We have to be good, we know that. It is a good test to see where we are."
