David Bowie’s daughter Lexi Jones has shared a touching tribute on what would have been the late singer’s 79th birthday.
Taking to Instagram, Jones, 25, shared two throwback photos showing her as a young girl posing with her father, while holding a homemade birthday cake on a plate decorated with fruit and topped with a single lit candle, bearing the message “Happy Birthday Dad.”
“Da big 79 today. Happy birthday pops, miss ya!” she wrote in the accompanying caption, adding a single blue heart emoji.
The post quickly drew an outpouring of affection from fans, many of whom shared their own messages of remembrance for the legendary singer-songwriter.
“Happy birthday to papa Jones. Probably has been loving your art,” wrote one follower, while another added: “HBD to the greatest of all time.”
“He always looked so happy near you,” remarked a third, reflecting on the warmth visible in the childhood photographs.
Bowie died aged 69 in January 2016 following a private battle with cancer, just two days after releasing his final studio album, Blackstar.
The record was immediately hailed as a powerful and deeply symbolic farewell, with its themes of mortality and reinvention taking on heightened significance in the wake of his death.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential musicians of all time, Bowie left behind a vast and genre-defying body of work that continues to resonate with audiences across generations.
From his glam-rock breakthrough as Ziggy Stardust to later incarnations including the Thin White Duke, Bowie constantly reinvented himself, reshaping the boundaries of pop music, fashion and performance art in the process.
Lexi largely grew up out of the public spotlight, protected by her parents from the intense scrutiny that surrounded her father’s fame. In recent years, however, she has begun sharing more of her own creative output, including artwork and music, occasionally prompting comparisons to Bowie’s distinctive artistic legacy.
She has previously spoken candidly about the complexities of growing up as the child of a global icon, acknowledging both the inspiration and pressure that comes with carrying the Bowie name, while expressing a desire to forge her own creative path.
Bowie was married to supermodel Iman at the time of his death and was also father to filmmaker Duncan Jones, from his previous marriage to Angie Bowie.
Duncan has established a successful career in cinema, directing films including Moon and Source Code, and has similarly carved out an identity independent of his father’s musical legacy.
