David Beckham in Arsenal's Invincibles squad - We end latest Piers Morgan vs Gary Lineker spat

Piers Morgan is never shy in speaking his mind.

He has, after all, made a very good living from it.

Love him or hate him he certainly has a way of grabbing people's attention and he did just that in what is the latest in what seems to be a long list of social media spats with Gary Lineker.

Given Morgan 's love for Arsenal and Lineker 's affinity with Tottenham it really is the equivalent of the North London Derby on Twitter when the two of them start going at it.

And Morgan's latest big opinion has got our backs up at football.london headquarters. The Arsenal fan tweeted on Sunday while at the Super Bowl: "Great to watch a Beckham who can actually play football…."

And that angered Lineker who responded: "You might dislike him, for whatever reason, but David Beckham was a great footballer. One of our finest."

Morgan, never one to stand down in an argument then went further: "You might want to suck up to him, for whatever reason, but Beckham was the most overrated player in history. Wouldn't have got onto the Arsenal Invincibles bench."

And it was that comment that we took umbrage with - "wouldn't have got onto the Arsenal Invincibles bench". Really, Piers?

Morgan, in responding to someone who asked what his talents were, appeared to clarify his comments by saying: "As I think today has proven… World’s Best Wind-up Merchant."

That suggests his comments about Beckham were tongue-in-cheek and perhaps written for a reaction, which he certainly got, but it made us think - and not to go all Carrie Bradshaw here - would Beckham have got into Arsenal's extraordinary 2003/04 squad ?

We asked our Arsenal writers to have their say...

Unsurprisingly, Piers Morgan is wrong on both counts with regards to his bizarre David Beckham claims.

No, he's not the most overrated player in history and yes he would have made the Arsenal Invincibles bench. It's quite ridiculous to suggest otherwise.

Whether Beckham gets into the Arsenal Invincibles ' best XI is up for debate as he would have been competing with an unsung hero in Freddie Ljungberg for a spot on the right-hand side of midfield.

Because his best attributes were crossing, long range passing and being a set-piece specialist, he may not have worked as well in an Arsene Wenger's system as it did for Manchester United.

But he definitely makes the Arsenal 2003/04 squad, especially as his work-rate down the flank often gets ignored and let's not forget he was one of the best players in Europe at the time - let alone the Premier League.

When you consider the praise Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kevin De Bruyne get for their crossing these days, Beckham is right up there with them ability wise and one can only dream of the A1 service he would have provided Thierry Henry and Robert Pires.

Of course he gets into Arsenal's Invincibles squad! We're talking about a player here who finished second in the 1999 Ballon d'Or standings at just 24 years old and then went to captain his country not long later.

For influence, leadership and work rate alone he would merit a place. That's before we take into account his undeniable, world-class technique.

If this debate was about Beckham getting into starting line-up, we could get into a long, heated conversation about the merits of Freddie Ljungberg as a right-sided midfielder compared to old Golden Balls.

But the comparisons we can make have to be against Arsenal's squad players from 2003/04. Ray Parlour is cult hero for Arsenal fans, but is anyone arguing that Beckham wouldn't get in that squad ahead of him? A teenage David Bentley at the time was, ironically, a tame impression of the England captain.

The premise of the debate is flawed because, let's face it, in 2004 David Beckham probably gets into any squad in any league. Sorry, Piers.

So, the question is, ‘Does one of the greatest passers of all time get into one of the best passing squads in history?’

Well, when you look at it from the perspective that David Beckham played in a Manchester United system entirely different to Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal, there could be a discussion to be had.

Plus, you have to factor in during the 2003/04 season whilst with Real Madrid Beckham played in central midfield for the most-part.

Then there’s the consideration of whether Beckham would have got in ahead of a 31-year-old Ray Parlour as competition for Freddie Ljungberg. Not to forget the brilliant Edu who provided central midfield cover for Patrick Vieira and Gilberto Silva.

Hold on a second, just going to slip off my silly shoes and put on something more sensible.

Of course, Beckham gets into the Invincibles squad. Without question.

Beckham is an absolute footballing icon, but he does not break into Arsene Wenger’s invincible side ahead of Freddie Ljungberg, or any of the other midfielders.

He does however, get into the squad at the very least.

Ljungberg had a quality from the midfield which is one of the rarest traits, and that was his knack to score goals.

Beckham was certainly more delightful on the eye, due to his magnificent deliveries and his set-pieces to match, but these weren’t traits that the Gunners were missing out on.

Thierry Henry was more than capable with free-kicks and the fact that the Frenchman wasn’t a direct number nine, it meant that Beckham’s deliveries wouldn’t have been a major addition to the side.

Patrick Vieira and Gilberto Silva’s ruggedness in the middle of the park alongside Ljungberg’s work rate was more desirable than the glamour Beckham would have bought to the side, so a place on the bench only is merited for the England legend.
