David Beckham finally responds to Joe Lycett’s £10k shred stunt - Inside World Cup spat

Joe Lycett got people talking with his public protest against 'ally' David Beckham's involvement with the Qatar World Cup.

In an extravagant, and divisive stunt, the comedian vowed to shred £10,000 of his own money if David, 47, continued to promote and support the country hosting the World Cup.

But what actually happened? We take a look into Joe's vendetta against David and FIFA.

Joe, who identifies as Pansexual, was furious with the football ace for associating himself with Qatar due to its stance on human rights and the fact that being gay in the country is illegal.

Dressed in a frilly rainbow outfit, Joe threw £10,000 into a wood chipping machine after he revealed that he had received no word from David.

Naturally, fans were furious with Joe for destroying money during a cost of living crisis, which prompted Joe to release a video where he revealed it was a stunt.

"This is my final message to David Beckham, it’s me, that p**** who shredded loads of money in a cost of living crisis.

"So, where were we? I told you I was gonna destroy £10,000 if you didn’t end your relationship with Qatar before the first day of the world cup, and then when you didn’t end your relationship or even respond in any way, I streamed myself dropping 10k into a shredder, or did I?" he teased.

"I haven’t quite told you the whole truth – the truth is the money that went into the shredder was real, but the money that came out was fake. I would never destroy real money," the comedian explained.

"I would never be so irresponsible, in fact, the 10 grand had already been donated to LGBTQ+ charities before I even pressed send on the initial tweet last week.

"I never expected to hear from you, it was an empty threat designed to get people talking. In many ways it was like your deal with Qatar David – total bulls**t from the start."

He then went on to pick up a cover of Attitude from June 2002, after David was the first ever Premier League footballer to feature on the front cover - resulting in him being hailed as a "gay icon".

"I asked Attitude if I could shred it, and they were more than happy to oblige," he teased before pushing it through a paper shredder.

"Gosh, it’s all been quite a lot this hasn’t it? Right, I’m off down the gay village to have a few pints," he joked.

However, there has been a twist after Joe claims that David has finally gotten in touch with him.

He tweeted: "UPDATE: David Beckham’s team have issued my programme with an exclusive statement, which will be broadcast tonight as part of my Got Your Back special at 9pm on @channel4"

"As far as we are aware this is the only statement he or his team have given to any outlet regarding his involvement in Qatar.

"I have been advised that legally I cannot give my opinion on it, so you’ll have to make up your own minds."

He continued: "We also speak to some LGBTQ+ football teams and Dr Nasser Mohamed, the first openly gay Qatari, who Beckham blocked on Instagram. We also reunite some of the cast of Footballers’ Wives lol."

Speaking on a podcast with Emily Maitlis, Joe previously said that he isn't "satisfied" with David's response, saying that he wants to speak with the footballer directly.

"I've not heard directly from Beckham. We have had some movement with his people," he explained.

"Basically, we've had some contact with them. [...] Legally at the minute, I'm not sure what I'm allowed to say. I'm not satisfied with where we've got to, let's put it that way."

Emily, 52, asked if they were offering money or donations, to which Joe responded: "No, none of that. They're not really offering anything really".
