Netflix special stand-up comedian Dave Chappelle appeared at a secret show at a comedy club in Liverpool last night.
The US star, who has recently faced criticism over jokes involving transgender people, appeared at the Hot Water Comedy Club on Wednesday evening. Taking to the stage at the intimate gig, Chappelle reportedly performed a set that lasted several hours.
Comedy fans in the city have expressed amazement at the secret show on social media. On Twitter, Hot Water Comedy Club said it only had two hours' notice that the global star would be performing at their venue.

It comes the day before he begins a short arena tour in the UK with fellow comedian Chris Rock. The pair are due to perform at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, before two dates at London’s O2 Arena.
Chappelle is also taking part in a special tribute concert in memory of late Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins. This is at London’s Wembley Stadium on September 3.
The Hot Water Comedy Club's website say it is "widely regarded as the UK’s best comedy promoter" and has "two award winning, purpose built comedy venues" in Liverpool - one on Seel Street and another on Hardman Street. Its social media posts about Dave Chapelle's show did not specify which of the two clubs he appeared at.
