Dates of every bank holiday in England and Wales for 2022 and 2023 as new one added

Many of us love our bank holidays and usually get eight every year. However in 2022 we have had and extra two giving us a bumper 10 days.

This was to mark the Platinum Jubilee of the Queen in June and then a second following her death when there was an additional one for her State Funeral.

And following her death and the succession of King Charles III people will be given an extra day of in 2023, it has been announced. Workers will now get a day to mark the King's coronation which is being held on Saturday May 6.

With the coronation being held on a weekend many feared people would not get a bonus day off in 2023. However it has now been said Monday May 8 will also be a bank holiday taking the total for 2023 to nine days.

There are two bank holidays left to come this year for Christmas Day and Boxing Day. These will be on Monday December 26 for Boxing Day and on Tuesday December 27 for Christmas Day as December 25 falls on a Sunday.

In 2023 there is a change right from the start as New Year's Day which is always a bank holiday also falls on a Sunday. This means Monday January 2 will be the bank holiday people get as a day off.

But what about the other days off which most people look forward to. There is additional time off for Easter when both Good Friday and Easter Monday are bank holidays. There are two in May - one at the beginning and one at the end - plus one in August.

But whenever the bank holidays fall it can have an impact on benefit payments. It also means families can plan to have extra time together, which means it is important to know when they are. You can check specific dates on the GOV.UK website.

Bank holidays are a national public holiday in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Crown dependencies. The term refers to all public holidays in the UK and they are held under common law or declared by royal proclamation.

Employers are not forced to give workers paid leave on bank or public holidays. Gov.uk says: "If a bank holiday is on a weekend, a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes a bank holiday, normally the following Monday. Your employer doesn’t have to give you paid leave on bank or public holidays."

It also warns the days off might mean benefit payment dates change. It says: "Bank holidays might affect how and when your benefits are paid."

There are only two remaining in 2022. These are Monday, December 26 which is Boxing Day and Tuesday, December 27 which is the substitute for Christmas Day.

Below is a list of all the upcoming bank holidays in England and Wales in 2023:

  • Monday, January 2 - New Year's Day (Substitute day)
  • Friday, April 7 - Good Friday
  • Monday, April 10 - Easter Monday

  • Monday May 8 - Coronation of King Charles III
  • Monday, May 29 - Spring bank holiday
  • Monday, December 25 - Christmas Day
