Darwin Nunez on Liverpool summer shortlist as next generation emerges after £50m move

Here is your Liverpool morning digest for Tuesday, June 7.

Darwin Nunez on Liverpool’s summer shortlist

Benfica striker Darwin Nunez is on Liverpool’s shortlist as they prepare for life without Sadio Mane.

But the highly-rated Uruguay international is one of several forwards being assessed with the Reds unwilling to pay over the odds in their attempt to continue evolving their attack.

Nunez has emerged as one of the leading names being discussed by Liverpool recruitment team after his reputation skyrocketed during an outstanding season with Benfica.

He scored 34 goals in 41 appearances and caught the eye when netting in the 3-3 draw at Anfield in the Champions League quarter-final in April.

Liverpool are assessing a number of possible targets given they are braced for the potential departure of Mane. They have already rejected a £25million bid from Bayern Munich for the Senegalese.

The 22-year-old Nunez fits the profile of the player Liverpool are seeking as they look to drive down the average age of their forward line.

But for the majority this has proven a breakthrough season, with the fortunes of both the under-23 and U18 sides demonstrating why Klopp continues to have no qualms turning to the Academy when required.
