Darwin Nunez new injury update and three other things spotted in Liverpool training

Liverpool are building up for the return of the Champions League when they entertain Real Madrid on Tuesday.

The Reds welcome the Spaniards in a repeat of last season's final in Paris, which Carlo Ancelotti's side won 1-0 on a controversial evening. Jurgen Klopp put his players through their paces at Kirkby on Monday afternoon as they continue their preparations for the Anfield clash.

But what could be gleaned from the session?

Nunez boost

From the moment he left the pitch at Newcastle United on Saturday holding his shoulder, Darwin Nunez became the main injury concern ahead of the visit of Real Madrid.

Klopp spoke earlier on Monday at his pre-match press conference that a decision would be made depending on whether Nunez could cope with the pain caused by the injury.

And with the Uruguayan among those who stepped out at Kirkby, there is now an increasing chance he could line up on Tuesday.

Duo standing by

If Nunez ultimately doesn't make it, Klopp will at least have options from which to choose in attack.

Having made outings from the bench in the last two games, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino once again were put through their paces without any reaction to their long-term injuries.

There was also an impromptu game of rock, paper, scissors from which it appeared Jordan Henderson was the winner. Well played, skipper.

Arthur's game

He had become an almost mythical figure among the Liverpool fanbase. But now Arthur Melo is evidently near to a return to the first-team squad.

The Brazilian, who managed just a brief substitute appearance before picking up a thigh injury in October, returned to training earlier this month and was on the pitch before the game at Newcastle United at the weekend.

And he was among those training at Kirkby. With 12 substitutes permitted in Europe, there's every chance Arthur could make the bench on Tuesday.

Quartet absent

While the injury list has shown welcome signs of clearing up somewhat for Liverpool, there remain a number of key absences.

Luis Diaz, despite stepping up his recovery last week, is still not ready for a full return, while Thiago Alcantara and Ibrahima Konate are remain out.

Youngster Calvin Ramsay, meanwhile, won't be seen again this season after undergoing surgery to rectify a knee problem.
