Dark matter, time travel and meta theatre: Emma Howlett on Aether

Emma Howlett - (Giulia Ferrando)

How to describe Aether, a new show written and directed by rising theatre superstar Emma Howlett? Well, the official blurb for the run at Jermyn Street Theatres is this: A PhD student hunting dark matter collides with: 1) A disillusioned illusionist 2) A teenage medium with a secret 3) A murdered mathematician 4) A trail-blazing astronomer. Together, they investigate the greatest unsolved mystery of the universe.

Which doesn’t offer much clarity but does whet the appetite, and has the Standard determined to find out more from writer/director Howlett. She first formed her company, theatregoose, during her second year at Oxford University, and with it a reputation for innovative, brainy and very fun productions that frequently are the talk of Edinburgh. And with the latest, Aether, you imagine a lot of that talk is: what was that all about then?
