Darius Campbell Danesh: Scottish Pop Idol star dies at age 41

Scottish singer and theatre actor Darius Campbell Danesh has died at the age of 41, his family have revealed.

The former Pop Idol contestant was found dead in his apartment in Rochester, Minnesota, on August 11. He was declared dead that afternoon by the local medical examiners' office.

The cause of death remains unknown. A statement from Campbell family reads: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Darius Campbell Danesh. Darius was found unresponsive in bed in his apartment room in Rochester, Minnesota, on August 11 and was pronounced dead in the afternoon by the local medical examiners' office.

"The local police department have confirmed that there were no signs of intent or suspicious circumstances. The cause of his sudden death is unknown at this stage while medical examinations continue.

"We ask that you kindly respect our wishes for privacy at this time whilst we come to terms with the tragic loss of our son and brother."

The Scottish singer-songwriter was known as Darius Danesh when he first appeared on ITV talent shows Popstars and Pop Idol. He placed third on the latter, behind Will Young and Gareth Gates.

Following this, he went on to have a successful theatre career. He appeared in West End productions of Chicago, Guys And Dolls, Gone With The Wind and more.

After his appearance on Pop Idol, he returned to TV in 2010 on ITV's Popstar To Operastar. He came first in the competition, beating finalists Bernie Nolan and Marcella Detroit.

Campbell was born in Glasgow in 1980. He studied English Literature and Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh.
