A drone attempting to smuggle more than $1 million worth of contraband into a prison has been intercepted by officers.

The illicit cargo featuring drugs, syringes and a mobile phone was downed as it approached Townsville Correctional Complex in north Queensland.

The device was secured by Queensland Corrective Services officers on May 17, sparking a police investigation.

"Thanks to the vigilance and actions of our officers, this drone and its contents was stopped before it could threaten the safety of officers and prisoners," complex general manager, Acting Chief Superintendent Silvi Baretta said.

Anyone with information has been urged to contact police.

In a similar incident, a drone carrying about $250,000 worth of drugs was intercepted at the Townsville Correctional Centre in late 2022.

The device crashed on the grounds and was located during patrols by officers.

It was carrying methylamphetamine, tobacco, cannabis and more than 600 suboxone strips, medication used for opioid addiction.
