Dara O Briain shows 'helpful' nonsense emergency alert message to amusement of fans

Comedian Dara Ó Briain is the latest star to share their reaction to the Government’s emergency alert this afternoon - by sharing a photo of his ‘helpful’ notification screen.

Phones around the country all simultaneously went off just before 3pm this afternoon as part of a test of the government’s emergency response system. It is hoped to be used in the future to alert people of danger to life situations, like floods or wildfires.

But, whilst some got the message earlier than the intended time and others didn’t get the message altogether, some, like Dara, seemingly received a completely different message.

Sharing a photo of his phone screen on Twitter, Dara’s alert came up in unreadable symbols instead of the intended ‘severe alert’ message from gov.uk. The comedian captioned the post: “Hmmm. Not sure this would be helpful in an emergency.”

Fellow comedian Jim Davidson playfully responded: “At least you know you have something to panic about!!”

Another replied: “You mean you can’t read alien language? Looks fine to me”, with someone else asking: “what in the iso latin 1 is going on here”

Another said: “Obviously an alien invasion alert, Dara! An emergency can come from Anywhere…even the stars!”

One other replied: "That’s this government’s go at Irish. Nailed it."

Many customers of the mobile network Three complained of not getting the alarm altogether, with hundreds of social media users sharing their lack of emergency notification.
