Danushka Gunathilaka refused bail, Sri Lankan cricketer suspended after sexual assault charges

The executive committee of Sri Lanka Cricket has suspended national player Danushka Gunathilaka from all forms of cricket after he was charged over an alleged sexual assault in Sydney.

Sri Lanka Cricket in a statement said it will carry out an inquiry into the alleged offence.

Sri Lanka Cricket said it wants to emphasise a "zero tolerance" policy for any such alleged conduct by a player and will provide all the required support to Australian law enforcement authorities.

It comes after the cricketer was denied bail following charges of an alleged sexual assault in Sydney.

The 31-year-old was arrested at a hotel in the city's CBD early yesterday morning, where his squad was staying for the T20 World Cup.

Mr Gunathilaka was charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent.

A bail application was made on Monday behind closed doors in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court, after a police prosecutor successfully requested a series of interim orders including suppressions and an order to close the courtroom.

Before the court was closed, Mr Gunathilaka appeared via audio-visual link wearing a grey T-shirt.

Defence lawyer Ananda Amaranath later said the bail application was unsuccessful and that he would take the matter to the NSW Supreme Court as soon as possible.

"He'll be disappointed, clearly," Mr Amaranath said outside court.

"It's often difficult to predict outcomes of matters and it's not in my hands.

"That's something I always advise all my clients and equally to him. I told him the same thing — that I cannot guarantee that he's going to be released on bail."

Mr Gunathilaka last played for his country on October 16, against Namibia, in Sri Lanka's opening game of the T20 World Cup in Geelong.

The rest of the team flew home on Sunday morning.
