Danny Murphy questions 'wow' factor of Newcastle's January transfers and outlines two key issues

Danny Murphy does not believe Newcastle United's January recruits have the 'wow' factor to guarantee Premier League survival.

Lyon playmaker Bruno Guimaraes was confirmed as the Magpies' third signing of the window on Sunday, following deals for Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

Newcastle look set to add a further two recruits on deadline day with Dan Burns and Matt Targett, although a deal for Reims forward Hugo Ekitike has reportedly broken down.

Eddie Howe's side remain a point adrift of safety despite their vital away victory at Leeds United in their last outing, and relegation rivals Burnley, Norwich City and Watford all hold games in hand.

Murphy believes Newcastle's business which could see six signings confirmed before Monday's deadline does give the club a 'much better chance' of avoiding the drop.

However, the former England and Liverpool midfielder has warned it will still be a 'tough fight' for the Magpies, and has questioned whether the new recruits will be able to adapt quickly.

Murphy told talkSPORT: "I still think it's going to be a tough fight for them.

"I don't think this group of signings are all 'wow' enough to go they're definitely going to get out of [danger]. But they've given themselves a much better chance because they've got better strength in depth.

"We'll have to wait and see on it of course, but I think the difficulty is always the same with new players. It's always the same.

"Can they adapt to the system that Eddie Howe wants them to play, [and] the pressure of playing under a new group of supporters who you want to endear to you as quickly as possible.

"That creates pressure no matter who you are or how good you are. These little conundrums you always have in January, they'll still be there."
