Danny McGrain: Celtic legend’s family reveals Alzheimer’s diagnosis

  • Former Celtic and Scotland captain Danny McGrain has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, his family announced in a statement released through the club.
  • His wife Laraine explained that the family chose to share the 76-year-old’s diagnosis publicly to explain why assisting supporters with charity events and visits has become more difficult, while ensuring he continues to receive support from fans.
  • Celtic confirmed that the legendary full-back remains in good spirits, enjoying time with his loved ones, following football, and staying close to the club.
  • McGrain made 663 appearances for Celtic between 1970 and 1987, winning seven league titles, five Scottish Cups, and two League Cups, alongside earning 62 caps for Scotland and playing in the 1974 and 1982 World Cups.
  • Celtic chief executive Michael Nicholson paid tribute to McGrain, calling him a true legend of the game and assuring that the club will provide full support, care, and kindness to Danny and his family.
