YouTube star Danny Malin has branded the food at Headingley's Chef Shabbas Kitchen as "heaven".
The Rate My Takeaway star, originally from Barnsley but lives in Leeds, travelled to the popular student area after hearing rave reviews about the Brudenell Road eatery. Dermaine Andre Walters, known as Chef Shabba, was working in Manchester as a chef before he began the Leeds business.
It started out as a takeaway and grew in popularity during Covid-19, before opening as a restaurant in 2022. It has become one of the most popular Caribbean restaurants in Leeds since its opening, and videos of the food have been seen over 15million times on TikTok. Food can also be ordered via Just Eat, Deliveroo, and Uber Eats.
Danny went along to the beloved spot in his famous Rate My Takeaway van with his camera man. Driving through Headingley, Danny said: "I absolutely love it around here but you can't park anyway. The students are just crazy."
In usual style, when Danny arrived at the eatery, he set up his iconic table and chair outside - ready to taste the raved-about food. "It looks like Love Island in here," the reviewer said.
He decided to try the popular Jamaican food boxes sold for £25 which include seasoned fries, jerk chicken, rice and beans, macaroni cheese, jerk wings, lamb chops, jerk prawns, and tender stemmed broccoli. He also had a bottle of Harrogate Spring water.
As his food arrived, Danny: "Wow that looks amazing." But he wasn't keen on the "devil's food" that was included - a corn on the cob.
He started with the rice and peas and said: "Oh wow, I am not kidding you that is amazing. The jerk sauce - oh my god."
Danny then ate the broccoli which he said has a "nice crunch". However the sweetcorn hater said "what is that" when he found the coleslaw had sweetcorn in it. Speaking about the jerk chicken he said it was "amazing". "The jerk sauce is absolutely bang on. It has got my lips tingling."
Danny couldn't get enough of the jerk macaroni cheese and said the prawns had a "tanging sweetness" to them. Danny said: "I think it is value for money. It is heaven. I think this is one of the best Jamaican dishes I've ever had.
"For me guys it is a nice solid 10."
