Danny Dyer surprised fans when he appeared on This Morning on Monday to urge them not to watch his new show.
The 45-year-old actor bowed out of EastEnders at the end of last year and is poised to make his dramatic return this week on Channel 5 show Heat.
The new series – which will air over four nights from Tuesday 11 July – sees Danny playing a character named Steve Cameron and drama unfold as explosive family secrets emerge while in Australia during a devastating bushfire.
But Danny has warned fans that they might struggle to cope with the dark content of the new series which will show him dealing with even more dramatic scenarios than anything he portrayed on EastEnders.
Speaking to Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary on This Morning, Danny urged fans: “It’s a nutty bit of work. Channel 5.“
Dermot then asked: “What do you mean, ‘it’s nutty bit of work’?”
Danny then explained: “I got this script and I read it and thought [exasperated exhale]. This is just... I’m going to be straight, I’m here to promote it but, if you don’t like dark things, don’t go near it.”
He went on to explain that each episode in the series ends on a more dramatic cliffhanger than the previous one and some viewers might find it too much.
He added: “It’s dark. It’s so dark - I was thinking ‘Can they put this on the telly?’“
Alison and Dermott anxiously asked if fans should bother watching episodes 2-4 and Danny said viewers would feel compelled to follow through.
He promised: “It’s brilliant. It gets so much better. It’s not bad, the first one.”
While Danny filmed the show in Australia, his hope of enjoying sunshine Down Under did not turn out.
He said: “I thought I want to fill in the sunshine! And I got to Melborne and it was raining. There were hailstones.“
He also struggled with the time difference and warned viewers that could come through in his performance.
He said: “The jet lag I had for 10 days. I couldn’t shake it off. In episode one, you can see I’m staggering around.“
Channel 5’s official synopsis of the new show states: “Heat unfolds to the backdrop of the looming Australian bushfire season when two families, who are long-time friends, venture to a secluded home for a summer vacation.
“As secrets and lies unravel it becomes a tinderbox – and not everyone will make it out alive.”
The series co-stars Darren McMullen, Jane Allsop, Pia Miranda and Olympia Valance.
Heat will air on Channel 5 at 9pm on Tuesday 11th July and feature nightly until Friday 14th July.
