Danny DeVito to return to Broadway with daughter Lucy in Theresa Rebeck’s ‘I Need That’

NEW YORK — Danny Devito will make his Broadway return in a new play that will also be a family affair.

The veteran actor, known for his Emmy and Golden Globe-winning turn in the 1970s sitcom “Taxi,” will front-line Roundabout Theatre Company’s world premiere of Theresa Rebeck’s “I Need That.”

His daughter Lucy Devito will make her Broadway debut in the Moritz von Stuelpnagel-directed comedy, which also stars Ray Anthony Thomas. The play is scheduled to begin performances in October.

A synopsis for the “deeply human new comedy” reads: “Sam (Danny Devito) doesn’t get out much. Actually, he doesn’t get out at all, opting instead for the safety of his house in the company of his things — his many, many things. But when a notice from the government arrives alerting Sam that he must clean up his property or face eviction, he’s forced to reckon with what’s trash, what’s treasure, and whether we can ever know the difference between the two.”

Rebeck, a 2003 Pulitzer Prize nominee, also authored the Broadway plays “Bernhardt/Hamlet,” “Dead Accounts,” “Seminar” and “Mauritius.”

Danny DeVito previously appeared in the 2017 Broadway production of Arthur Miller’s “The Price.” For his role in the 1968 New York City-set play, the star won the Drama Desk Award for outstanding featured actor. He also scored a Tony Award nomination for best performance by an actor in a featured role.

Lucy DeVito most recently appeared in Netflix’s “Blonde.” Although she’s had bit roles in her father’s projects, including the films “Dumbo” and “The Comedian,” the 40-year-old has an impressive list of credits, including the ABC Family sitcom “Melissa & Joey” and the FXX animated sitcom “Little Demon.”
