A princess of the Danish royal family was uninvited to the Queen's funeral after her invite was sent by mistake, it's been claimed.
Denmark's Queen Margrethe II and her son, Prince Frederick, could be seen in their seats at yesterday's solemn occasion.
But according to an initial statement released by the country's royals last week, the Prince's wife, Crown Princess Mary, was also supposed to attend.
Notably absent, tabloids in the Scandinavian country have now revealed Mary, 50, didn't go after all - for a rather awkward reason.
According to the newspaper BT, the Government sent out Princess Mary's invitation in error.
The Danish royals revealed she was invited by accident, and confirmed only the Prince and Queen were meant to attend at Westminster Abbey.
“There has been a regrettable error in the invitation from the British Foreign Office’s protocol," the royals confirmed.
"It is thus only the Queen and the Crown Prince who, from the Danish side, will participate in Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral on Monday.”
Queen Margarethe is currently Europe's longest reigning queen following the death of Elizabeth II earlier this month.
A longtime friend and distant cousin of Queen Elizabeth, she has been on Denmark's throne for 50 years this year and celebrated her Golden Jubilee just days ago.
The celebrations included a minute's silence for Queen Elizabeth, described as a "towering monarch" by the Danish ruler.
Her son and heir, Prince Frederik, was seen alongside her viewing the Queen's lying-in-state at Westminster Hall on Sunday.
His wife, Crown Princess Mary, was presumably not supposed to be invited due to the invitation extending to only one extra guest for each world leader or dignitary.
Dubbed Denmark's own Kate Middleton due to her impeccable style, the royal is highly popular among the Danes and has met and worked with the Duchess on several occasions.
A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said: “The FCDO has passed on their profound apologies to the Danish Royal Household through the Danish Embassy.”
In a moving letter written to King Charles following the sad news, Queen Margrethe described Elizabeth II as "very important to me and my family".
"She was a towering figure among the European monarchs and a great inspiration to us all," said the Dane in her condolences which were shared on the Danish royal family's official social media.
"Throughout her reign in times difficult as well as positive she has played a crucial role as a unifying figure highly respected and deeply loved."
