AlphaTauri racer Daniel Ricciardo injured his left hand in a crash during practice at the Dutch Grand Prix on Friday, and the Australian driver has been ruled out for Sunday’s race.
Ricciardo suffered a broken metacarpal bone and will be replaced behind the wheel this weekend by reserve driver Liam Lawson, AlphaTauri announced.
The accident occurred 10 minutes into Friday’s second practice session, when McLaren’s Oscar Piastri lost control and crashed into the wall on the first banked corner of the track in Zandvoort, Netherlands. Ricciardo was not traveling far behind Piastri, and he lost control of his car while trying to avoid Piastri.
Ricciardo missed Piastri, but crashed hard into the wall. Ricciardo was then heard yelling “F---, my hand. F---,” to his team, which was communicating with him by radio.
Ricciardo walked away from the crash holding his left hand and was seen leaving the medical center on site with his arm in a sling. He was taken to a hospital in Zandvoort for further evaluation, and an X-ray subsequently revealed the fracture.
