Daniel Levy and Tottenham have four transfer priorities to reshape squad for new head coach

This season has highlighted that so much more has to be done in the transfer market if Tottenham are to progress as a club. Signing seven players last summer, a further two were added in January with Pedro Porro and Arnaut Danjuma joining from Sporting CP and Villarreal respectively.

With seven games remaining in Tottenham's campaign, the Lilywhites are still very much in the mix for a top-four finish but it is all going to come down to how they fare in the run-in with inconsistency plaguing them since the term got underway. Cristian Stellini's team really should be higher than fifth going on some of the points they've dropped, including recently against struggling Wolves, Leicester City, Southampton, Everton and Bournemouth.

So what exactly does Daniel Levy have to do for Tottenham's next head coach before the summer transfer deadline draws to a close? football.london takes a look below.

Goalkeeper

One of Tottenham's main priorities this summer will be to bring in Hugo Lloris' long-term successor. Spurs have so far struggled to find their ideal goalkeeper to take on the Frenchman's gloves but it is something that they must do before the end of August.

Lloris has made a number of high-profile errors throughout the campaign and he's edging towards the final few years in his career. Tottenham need to plan ahead and build a team that can compete for years to come, starting with a new goalkeeper.

football.london reported in February that some of the names on their shortlist include Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, Brentford's David Raya, Brighton stopper Robert Sanchez and AC Milan's Mike Maignan.

Centre-back

Linked with Inter Milan's Alessandro Bastoni and RB Leipzig's Josko Gvardiol last summer, in the end Tottenham added Clement Lenglet to their backline after agreeing on a loan deal with Barcelona. The French international has played plenty of football since his switch to N17 but he is not a centre-back who is going to take Tottenham's backline to the next level.

That's what Spurs must do this summer if they are to move forward as a club. Tottenham need to bring in two top-quality centre-backs to play alongside Cristian Romero and form a mean backline in the process.

Another quality centre-back to provide cover would certainly suffice, although it's hard to see wholesale changes in one particular position take place all in one transfer window. Players such as Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga could make way, with Lenglet possibly returning to the Camp Nou after his year in the capital.

Midfield

Three years on from Christian Eriksen departing Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Inter Milan, Spurs have still yet to bring in a direct replacement for the Dane. There is a real lack of creativity in the Spurs team, with the onus very much on Harry Kane to not only score goals but assist them as well.

Just having an attacking midfielder would give Spurs options and allow them to change their formation at times rather than persisting with the same setup. Many fans have called on the club to launch a summer move for James Maddison, who will soon enter the final year of his Leicester City deal which will allow clubs to save a bit of money on the England international.

Another central midfielder could also be needed before the transfer window slams shut. This may all depend on what happens with Pape Matar Sarr ahead of next season as he could potentially head out on loan due to a lack of minutes, while there is of course the possibility that the new man at the helm could possibly want to keep Tanguy Ndombele or Giovani Lo Celso and have them as part of their squad going forward.

Tottenham fans have yet to see the best of Yves Bissouma since his summer move and the 2023/24 campaign will herald a fresh start for him after such a frustrating first year in the capital.

Attack

There will be some movement in the attacking department come the end of the campaign with Lucas Moura moving on for a new challenge and Arnaut Danjuma returning to Villarreal after his loan deal. Spurs do have the option in their agreement with the Yellow Submarines to sign the Netherlands international permanently, but a lack of regular football means the attacker unfortunately hasn't had the minutes required to show Spurs why they should offer him a long-term deal.

That means Tottenham ideally need to bring in two new attackers if they want to have two players for each position as Antonio Conte preferred. Bryan Gil could take up one of those roles if Tottenham decide to keep him following the end of his loan spell with Sevilla.

The Spain international showcased his talent at the turn of the year when given a chance by Conte and the new head coach will have to make a decision on him. Spurs will still find themselves in the same position with Gil as his loan move to Sevilla means he still has very little Premier League experience to his name.
