The Indianapolis Colts are one of the teams most favored to trade up for the No. 1 overall pick with the Chicago Bears as the 2023 NFL draft slowly creeps closer.
While there have been proposals all over the place between the Colts and Bears, Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network made a proposal of his own during a conference call with the media last week.
Buy Colts TicketsJeremiah proposed that the Colts would also receive a 2024 fourth-round pick in addition to the No. 1 pick in 2023.
“A fourth-round pick in 2024 as well as the No. 1 overall pick. [Bears] would get No. 4 overall, No. 35 overall, and a first-round pick in ’24, and a second-round pick in ’24,” Jeremiah said.
So this is what the deal would look like:
Colts receive:
- 2023 No. 1 overall pick
- 2024 fourth-round pick
Bears receive:
- 2023 No. 4 overall pick
- 2023 No. 35 overall pick
- 2024 first-round pick
- 2024 second-round pick
The price to pay for a potential franchise quarterback is high. Ballard might be hesitant to make this kind of deal, but he also may have no choice. It wouldn’t be a surprise if owner Jim Irsay essentially forces a trade up to ensure the Colts get who they want once they figure out which prospect that is.
And while that price may seem a little steep in Jeremiah’s proposal, that’s because it is. Jeremiah also said in the conference call that team’s typical pay a premium when it comes to draft pick value.
“My buddy Jack in research, we’ve been working on this for the last couple of days, and he kind of spelled it out for me here. If you look at those trades — trade-ups for quarterbacks, usually when you look at the trade chart, it’s about 120%, give or take, in terms of the trade chart value,” Jeremiah said. “You have to pay a premium if you are going to come up for a quarterback, which is great news there for the Bears.”
Holding onto that first-round pick in 2024 should be a priority for the Colts, but that may be the kicker if they truly want to move up for a quarterback. They could certainly take their chances and hope their top prospect falls to them at No. 4, but that’s an uncomfortable situation for the entire front office.
We’ll see if the Colts—or any other team—makes a move for the top pick in the draft and if they do, the price could very well be steep.
