Daniel James transfer bid considered among others as Tottenham plan for potential Bryan Gil exit

Tottenham Hotspur have considered Leeds winger Daniel James as one of the many potential options to replace Bryan Gil but have not advanced any interest at this stage, football.london understands.

Spain international Gil, who was only signed last summer, is being tipped to make a second loan move to Valencia with the La Liga club's head coach Gennaro Gattuso publicly stating on Saturday that he liked the player and wanted to bring the 21-year-old back to the club.

Tottenham have made seven signings this summer and Antonio Conte has suggested that he would be content to go into the rest of the campaign with the current squad now at his disposal. Spurs will only move again in the market if either one of the players in Conte's plans departs in the remaining days of the window or if a late opportunity arises that is too good to pass on.

Tottenham are currently focused on moving players out of the club, in particularly Harry Winks and Sergio Reguilon as they have been informed that they are not in Conte's plans. Gil and defender Japhet Tanganga are currently in the Italian's squad but the club would considers moves for them that are either beneficial to their development or financially attractive.

Conte made it clear to football.london on Saturday that if Gil were to leave then he would need to be replaced and that the club also understood that.

"This squad is this and if someone goes away then another has to come. This has to be very clear for everybody. Otherwise we stay with this squad and we continue our path with these players, this squad," said the Italian. "But if someone has to go away, along another must come. This is very clear for me, for the club, but we are totally agreed on this aspect."

Spurs have considered 24-year-old James previously as a potential signing and football.london understands that managing director of football Fabio Paratici likes the player, but Tottenham have not taken it past that point of consideration with no discussions held between the clubs about the former Manchester United winger, who only joined Leeds last summer.

A move for the Wales international would seem on paper to be a strange one as he would likely get less football at Tottenham than he would at Leeds and would also not be considered homegrown in the club's already overstuffed Champions League squad.

UEFA considers players to be homegrown or 'locally trained' if they were trained by the club or by another club in the same national association for at least three years between the ages of 15 and 21. James moved to Swansea at the age of 16 and the Welsh club and Cardiff are not considered as part of the English national association despite competing in the English game, which is why Ben Davies and Joe Rodon, currently on loan at Rennes, are not considered locally trained for Spurs. Eric Dier and Matt Doherty also fall into the same category due to their formative years being spent in Portugal and Ireland.

Tottenham do hold a firm interest in 21-year-old Everton star Anthony Gordon, the subject of interest from Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle, and Paratici is also a big admirer of Newcastle's Allan Saint-Maximin and Wolves winger Adama Traore among other wide men.
