Dancing on Ice's Ekin-Su defended over 'sexist' backlash as critics slam 'inappropriate' routine

Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu has had her fan rally round her after some Dancing on Ice viewers threatened to contact Ofcom over her debut performance branding it 'inappropriate' for Sunday evening TV.

Going into Sunday's launch show, the Love Island winner was well fancied to do well with bookies, with some having her at the top of the odds on who was going to win the new series, while others had her just behind gymnast Nile Wilson in the betting. However, while Olympian Nile had a fantastic first week on Dancing on Ice, the night ended in disaster for Ekin-Su and her professional partner Brendyn Hatfield, as they ended up in next week's skate-off.

The couple performed midway through Sunday's series opener, with Ekin-Su making quite an impression on both the judging panel and viewers at home, as she skated to Britney Spears classic Toxic, in a costume reminiscent of the number 1 hit's famous music video.

At one point Ekin even crawled along the ice, in a cheeky nod to her infamous Love Island roof terrace moment. But, while fans lapped her routine, calling her an 'icon,; the performance was also met with some criticism online. Dancing on Ice started at 6.30pm and accusing Ekin-Su of being 'wholly inappropriate' for the early evening time slot, one tweeted: "I am honestly shocked at #DOI 1) for allowing such an inappropriate outfit and 2) someone to crawl over the ice and she was overmarked," and a second reacted: "Not an outfit for a family show, shame you on Ekin Su.."

Another critic posted: "@ekinsuofficial’s @dancingonice outfit is NOT suitable pre-watershed."

However, for the comments having a go at Ekin-Su, there were plenty of others fighting her corner. Hitting back at some of the vile remarks about her online, one responded: "You don't go to a beach and say inappropriate outfits for a family place. Nothing inappropriate about that outfit. She was more dressed than what we see in these streets. She was looking beautiful."

Also backing her, another tweeted: "Do the peeps complaining about @ekinsuofficial outfit realise she was literally COVERED from head to toe in a body suit? A few green eyed monsters out tonight," with a third ring: "Obsessed with the Karens on the hashtag moaning about Ekin Su’s outfit, what did you want her to wear? A Sunday dress"
