Dancing on Ice new series gets 'over due' format change in move backed by ITV viewers

Dancing on Ice is back for a new series and with a major change that has been welcomed by fans of the much loved show.

It was back at the start of 2006 that Olympic legends Torvill and Dean first welcomed a host of celebrities to the rink, with them paired up with top skating stars to perform in front of a live studio audience and millions of viewers at home.

The first series of Dancing on Ice was won by ex Coronation Street actress Gaynor Faye and since then champions who've followed in her footsteps have included Ray Quinn, Hayley Tammadon, Kyran Bracken and Suzanne Shaw.

After a few years away from screens, Dancing on Ice returned to ITV in 2008, with more recent winners including ex Strictly pro James Jordan and reigning champion Regan Gascoigne.

The line-up for the new series features Love Island winner Ekin-Su, Liberty X's Michelle Heaton, Coronation Street star Molly Gallagher and Olympic gymnast Nile Wilson.

The show, once again hosted by Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, will return to ITV1 on Sunday, December 15 at 6.30pm and, as well as its start date being announced, it has also been confirmed that rather than having a two hour live show every weekend, as it has done in the past, where the first lot of celebs have skated in week one, followed by the rest seven days later; this year the series is reduced to 90 minutes per episode.

This will mean that rather than viewers only getting to see six dances in two hours, there will be 11 in just an hour and a half, meaning a lot more action and less 'filler.'

The move has received the firm backing of fans, with one responding: "This has long been over due. Gets my vote. I might watch it now," with another reacting: "This sounds way better. Cut out the filler and just give us the dances and the scores. The old way was so slow and broke up with ad breaks (sic) too much."
