Dancing On Ice champion Nile Wilson jokes his final routine wasn't safe for one reason

Dancing On Ice winner Nile Wilson has joked that his jaw-dropping final routine shouldn't have been given the go-ahead.

The Olympic athlete, 27, took the crown after a nail-biting final between him and former The Only Way Is Essex star Joey Essex which tested his gymnastic skills.

While the Leeds-born star may have a Bronze medal from the 2016 Rio de Janeiro games after his Horizontal bar routine, he admits he was quite scared for the Dancing On Ice final.

During his show stopping routine, Nile showcased his bar skills which saw him do a handstand – all while remaining on the ice.

The star appeared on This Morning alongside his professional partner, Sheffield-born Olivia Smart.

Speaking to hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, Nile joked: "That, specifically, it shouldn't have been cleared by health and safety.

"It was four men holding scaffolding poles while I'm doing a handstand two meters in the air," before explaining the medic was on edge.

Meanwhile, Holly said that most routines on a Horizontal bar are often performed while the bar is bolted to the floor.

Following his victory on the show, Nile said: "I want to thank everyone that voted back home, I really appreciate it.'

"I just want to say, if Dancing on Ice is anything other than entertainment, we've got eleven human beings all different shapes and sizes stood on this stage tonight with an allocated time to get good at something and we've proved that we can do that.

"So what an inspirational show! If you put your mind to something and you work hard you can achieve anything you want."

Nile made Dancing On Ice history by becoming the first male contestant to take on the infamous headbanger routine which often sees the female be swung around by her feet.

Speaking before the live final, Nile told MailOnline: "I will be the first male contestant to be lifted in a headbanger and I am petrified."

However, the dangerous move is banned by the International Skating Union which manages competitive skating.

But while he may have been worrying, judge Ashley Banjo said: "After the week I know you've had, to pull that routine off cleanly with no mistakes is incredible," before awarding him a 10.
