Dancing On Ice 2022 fans react as Happy Monday's Bez makes history with debut

Dancing On Ice 2022 has officially kicked off with the first six contestants making their debut on Sunday night.

Among them was Happy Mondays star Bez and his professional partner Angela Egan, who won the show in 2021 with Sonny Jay.

As he entered the rink, host Phillip Schofield revealed Bez was making history as the first contestant in the dance contest's 14 series to wear a crash helmet.

Bez was cheered on by Shaun Ryder as he was lowered onto the ice on a giant pair of maracas while wearing the melon patterned helmet and padding.

Judges gave Bez a score of 12.5 out of 40, but his skate was praised by judge Ashley Banjo.

"Bez, I've got to give it to you, you've got my respect.

"If anyone needed to wear a crash helmet, I don't think they'd come out, whereas you come out and do it regardless.

"Let's be real, this is dangerous and it is scary and you are out here in all the pads and crash helmet."

Fans loved Bez's uplifting performance, with one viewer writing: "Hilarious! #happymondays Bez dancing with a crash helmet on for protection on @dancingonice while Shaun Ryder cheers him #TVGold."

While another added: "Oh my god, Bez you absolute LEGEND."

And a third commented: "Tomorrow's Blue Monday has been cancelled as folks are full of joy after seeing Bez perform on Dancing On Ice."
