Dancer goes from running triathlons to wheelchair in month - and can only walk in heels

A dancer went from competing in a triathlon to being in a wheelchair in a matter of weeks due to a rare neurological condition.

Now she has discovered she can walk again - but only if she wears high heels.

Yasmine Gibb, 29, had not long celebrated completing her first sprint triathlon in May, before she was rushed to hospital with excruciating stomach pains.

But she was misdiagnosed with a kidney infection and sent home with antibiotics shortly before her legs began "giving way", according to the 29-year-old.

The hotel services manager then discovered she could barely walk and suffered a terrifying seizure on her bathroom floor.

Following scans and further tests, she was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder - a condition which affects the nervous system.

But while facing a six-month wait for treatment, during which time she's been largely reliant on a wheelchair, Yasmine was amazed to discover she can walk confidently in high heels.

Incredible footage shows Yasmine struggling to walk as her legs shake violently - before she straps on her heels and struts confidently around.

She believes she can walk so well in the heels after years spent practicing as an Irish dancer.

Now, she plans to use the discovery to relearn to walk, and she hopes to get back to triathlons one day.

Yasmine, from Glasgow, Scotland, explained: "In the hospital the neurologist tried a few different walking techniques. I was able to be much steadier on the tips of my toes but I was still shaking a little.

"I used to walk about my house like this for years due to being a dancer so he reckoned the years of practice may have helped as my concentration is on something else.

"I'll also be using them as part of my physio programme. It's so incredible to walk and not shake or for my leg to give way.

"It gives me a little normality even for a small while before I go back to shaking in the heels, then it's scary as it's quite the tumble as they are quite high.

"The heels lasted for about an hour the other day - not constant but maybe five-minute periods up to an hour then I was shaking again.

"My legs are still bad. I went to the park in a wheelchair this week. I can wander a little bit but I'm in a lot of pain afterwards.

"I've got really severe back pain and I've basically been told to slow it down.

"I'm in a wheelchair most of the time now but the aim is to not be. They don't want you to use a wheelchair and don't recommend it because they want you to use muscles but I wouldn't be able to do anything if not. I would be climbing the walls.

"Unfortunately there isn't a plan for my treatment. The neurologist said I could wait up to six months because they have a long list to see.

"My aim was to do a half Ironman next year but we'll see. You never know. Miracles have happened."
