Dan Walker's seat on BBC Breakfast gets taken after 'awkward' moment with co-host Sally Nugent

Dan Walker only announced his BBC Breakfast on Monday but his seat had already been filled... sort of. The presenter announced the news that he was quitting the early morning news programme after six years on social media earlier this week.

He revealed that he'll now be swapping mornings for the afternoon as the host of Channel 5's revamped 5 News. He will replace Sian Williams after she announced she was stepping down earlier last month.

Dan joined the programme back in 2016 to host the early morning news programme alongside Louise Minchin. His exit comes seven months after his former co-host spent her last day hosting the programme, 20 years after first joining, after announcing her own exit a few months earlier.

Dan, who also left his role on Football Focus last year, said "it’s been a massive decision" for him to leave his job at the BBC for a new role but that "the chance to do something different was too good to turn down." He also addressed his departure upon his return to the famous red sofa on Tuesday (April 5) after being accused of being 'motivated by money'.

While his last day is still unclear, with Dan just saying that he'll be leaving the BBC "in the next few weeks", attention has turned to his replacement and during Wednesday's edition of BBC Breakfast, on April 6, someone did briefly step into the role.

Dan and co-host Sally Nugent spoke to cyclist Bradley Wiggins about his latest cycling challenge. He's getting back on his bike to raise awareness for men's mental health.

But decorated Olympian Bradley turned the interview around on his interviewers and asked Dan: "When are you leaving?" to which Dan replied: "In a few weeks time."

Sally then pointed out: "There's a vacancy. I think you'll be perfect," leading to Dan offering to change seats with Bradley who was more than willing to do so and the pair jumped up and did the swap over. Sally commented: "Let's see how we look together."

Dan continued the interview in the new seating arrangement and Sally let Bradley read the link the autocue. Dan laughed and told the sportsman: "You've got the job."

It came after an 'awkward' moment between Dan and Sally earlier in the show when they discussed the changes to divorce laws which come into force from today in England and Wales. In the biggest change in decades, it will see the end of the need for separating couples to blame one of themselves for their seperation.

But Sally couldn't help but bring up Dan's impending exit and joked: "I like the idea of an amicable divorce, Dan," to which, after a short pause, he replied: "Awkward, before adding: "I'm still here for a few weeks don't worry."
