Dan Walker relives frightening 'out of body experience' after blacking out from bike crash

Dan Walker spoke to Jeremy Vine on his Channel 5 show Thursday morning about his ongoing recovery from a horrific bike accident 10 days ago as he confirmed his return to Channel 5 News.

"You're looking so much better than you did a week ago it's brilliant," Jeremy said.

The Channel 5 news presenter replied: "I feel a lot better as well," before addressing how his facial injuries have healed.

"My kids think I am like Wolverine! I'm very thankful I've healed facially, there's still a few lumps and bumps and grazes all over me. I've got a badly damaged hand, I won't take my trousers off Jeremy but I've got a massive bruise on my right hip at the moment."

"I'm really thankful to the paramedics, to the police, to the people that looked after me in hospital and I've found out when I spoke to the police last week that there were five people who when I came off the bike they came onto the roundabout and sat with me for 25 minutes until the ambulance turned up.

"I've got zero memory of any of that Jeremy I can't remember anything from the moment I arrive on the roundabout but it's things like that, the goodness of people in difficult situations but I'm very grateful to be here and getting back to the job that I love...going back on telly later today."

Talking about the incident, he explained he remember arriving at the roundabout looking to his right and "seeing a gap" but then suffered an "out of body experience".

"I saw myself looking at a black screen and then the screen expanded from a white circle in the middle of it and into that circle came the heads of two paramedics, the police officer and I think the driver that had hit me in the car," he recalled.

The 5News presenter revealed he didn't have any flashbacks of the time he blacked out but noted he underwent several scans on his brain which have confirmed he's okay.

On a video of the incident that has been circulating on social media, Dan said: "I haven't watched and I don't want to watch it."

Speaking on his recovery process, Dan said he used his time on Strictly Come Dancing to help test himself.

He watched some of his old dances back to see whether he could remember them.

Jeremy Vine on 5 airs on Channel 5 on weekdays at 9.15am. Dan Walker returns to Channel 5 News on Thursday at 5pm.
