Dan Walker flooded with messages from co-stars as he hosts last BBC Breakfast before move to rival

Dan Walker has been receiving good luck and goodbye messages from his co-stars and fans as he hosts his last episode of BBC Breakfast. The presenter is leaving the morning news programme after six years.

He announced his plans to leave the BBC early last month, which came after he left his job as host of Football Focus. And he was quick to reveal what he was going on to do next, revealing that fans will be able to see him fronting Channel 5's revamped 5 News as he replaces Sian Williams.

And all good things must come to an end and weeks after revealing his exit, it was time for Dan's last day on BBC Breakfast on Tuesday (May 17). But ahead of his final appearance, the 45-year-old revealed his prep hasn't quite gone to plan.

He revealed that he only managed to lock in “two hours and 46 minutes” sleep before hosting his final BBC Breakfast due to "travel issues" the night before. Dan took to social media to share his “final stroll” into the BBC studio in the early hours of Tuesday morning while saying he did not have the "best prep for the final day".

In a previous post from the night before, Dan said he was stuck on the M4 charging his electric vehicle and joked he may not make it to the studio in time. Then on Tuesday morning, he managed to get home eventually but it was late in the evening, so he only got less than a few hours kip.

Despite that, he commented on the "glorious morning" and said he was heading into his final show "armed with cakes for the brilliant breakfast team who have been a pleasure to work for the last six years".

Also taking to social media before their final show together was Dan's fairly new co-host Sally Nugent. She said it is the "end of an era" as she shared a picture of herself alongside Dan. She tweeted: "End of an era. Join us on ⁦@BBCBreakfast with ⁦@mrdanwalker⁩ for the last time. One or two surprises on the way."

BBC Breakfast sport presenter Mike Bushell was also among the people sending Dan farewell messages. He tweeted: "Breakfast legend @mrdanwalker will always be. One of loveliest h sapiens on the tele box and genuine wonderful friend and bloke off it. Always makes a very difficult job seem so easy. Could present anything, unlike Lynn (in AP) even a cat. Have a great last show @BBCBreakfast."

Jon Kay, who is currently tipped to be Dan's replacement on the famous sofa, said: "Farewell @mrdanwalker. You've been brilliant on @BBCBreakfast – especially guiding us all through those early lockdown days with such kind, calm and reassuring authority. A real gent. The whole team will miss you. Good luck, sir!"
