Lions coach Dan Campbell is a Texas A&M alumnus, so it seems natural to connect him to the Aggies’ head coach opening. But he reportedly isn’t interested, preferring to stay with Detroit.
Texas A&M had reached out through backchannels, according to CBS Sports’s Dennis Dodd. But Campbell—or his people—made it clear that he intends to stay with the Lions. Detroit is currently 7–2, good for first place in the NFC North division and the No. 2 overall seed in the NFC standings.
Campbell played at Texas A&M from 1995 to ’98 as a tight end and flanker, appearing in 48 games during his four years in College Station. But all of his coaching experience is in the NFL, first as an assistant with the Dolphins (including a 12-game stint as interim head coach) and then with the Saints, before he got the top job with the Lions in 2021.
Oregon’s Dan Lanning has also denied interest in the Texas A&M opening, while Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and Colorado’s Deion Sanders have faced questions regarding the job.
Texas A&M fired Jimbo Fisher after Week 11’s 51–10 win over Mississippi State, with athletic director Ross Bjork saying that the football program was “stuck in neutral.” Of the six head-coaching jobs that are currently open, the Aggies’ position is arguably the most appealing with the highest potential salary.
