Jared Goff is entering his third season as the Lions‘ starting quarterback, and coach Dan Campbell seems to be deeply committed to the former No. 1 draft pick.
Goff told ESPN he “would love to” make Goff the team’s long-term quarterback.
“There’s nothing that tells me he can’t be,” Campbell said. “When you have a quarterback you believe in, why would you ever move on? I get there are other circumstances, but it’s hard to find quarterbacks in this league. We’ve got a guy we can win with right now. We’re fortunate to have him; that’s how I see it.”
Goff signed a four-year contract extension while with the Rams in 2019. That pact kicked in when his rookie deal expired following the ’20 season.
He’s currently set to become a free agent after the ’24 season. This means Campbell and the Lions front office don’t have to make a decision about Goff any day soon, but it sounds like the coach has already made up his mind.
The 28-year-old Goff enjoyed a resurgent 2022 season, recording 4,438 passing yards, 29 touchdown passes and seven interceptions. He ranked sixth in the league in passing yards and seventh in passer rating (99.3) last season.
