Dan Burn's Trafalgar Square desire as he vows to banish Wembley heartache

Dan Burn believes Newcastle United will be back at Wembley and hopes the Carabao Cup Final, despite defeat, will be a benefit to the club. The Magpies' first cup final in 24 years ended in a two-nil defeat to Manchester United but Burn is taking the positives from the game.

"We are proud of what we have achieved in such a short space of time," he told reporters after the game, "When you get to a final you obviously want to win.

"It is such a long time since we have won anything we want to get it done but we will be back again, the club is in a good position to attack these clubs where we have not in the past and we want to remember this feeling and concentrate on the league, and not have this feeling at the end of the season when hopefully we've hit our targets.

"I don’t want this feeling again, we need to take this. To feel this low when we have had such a strong year and don't want it to happen again. We will use this and will serve us well for the rest of the season."

Newcastle fell to a five-minute spell in which Manchester United capitalized, first through a Casemiro goal on 33 minutes, and five minutes later Sven Botman turned Marcus Rashford's shot into his own net. The goals arguably came against the run of play, but the Magpies struggled to test Erik ten Hag's men. They almost pulled one back before the break as Allan Saint-Maximin forced David de Gea into a one-handed save, and it was Burn who also went close with a header.

Asked about the chance, he said: "[It was a] big chance. I was falling back a bit and if I had scored the game would have changed so I am disappointed."

A goal for the boyhood Toon fan would have added to what was already a heart-warming weekend - with Burn's family and friends in the stands, and thousands of Geordie taking over London, the defender admits it pulled at the heartstrings.

"I felt very emotional this morning," he said. "I am not lying, but as soon as I got here and the game started I did not think about it.

"Being a local lad and knowing how much it means to the city, and Trafalgar Square last night, I just wanted to be there rather than be in the hotel but it was emotional. We attacked the game just like we did any other.

"It has been an emotional weekend. It has been hard to push it out and keep it away. It was nice. You can appreciate how much of an occasion it is and how happy the city is to be enjoying its football again. You want it to be a regular occasion. Teams like City and Liverpool. City won this like five years in a row and are used to it.

"We want to be there. You cannot just get there straight away. We need to get to the last stage but we are in good stead."

Burn - unsurprisingly conceded he was 'gutted' at the result - but with Manchester City next up in the Premier League, he's not allowing himself too much time to dwell on the final. "I have forgotten about it already! We push it to the side. It is done. We now have to concentrate on the league."
