Newcastle United stars Kieran Trippier had a cheeky message for Sunderland after heading to see Sam Fender in action on Tuesday night, with teammate Dan Burn also spotted in the crowd.
With tickets for both of Sam’s shows at the Utilita Arena like gold dust, fans were flocking to social media with hours to go in the hope of getting their hands on a last minute pair. And two people lucky enough to be in the capacity Sam Fender crowd on Tuesday night were United players Kieran and Dan.
Kieran hasn’t long returned from Dubai, having been ruled out of Eddie Howe’s side for weeks now, due to injury. The England international took to Twitter after leaving the arena to post a video of Sam performing encore track Hypersonic Missiles, the title of his first of two number 1 albums.

And he couldn’t resist having a cheeky dig at Newcastle’s Wearside rivals in the caption. Above the clip of Sam on stage, Kieran wrote: “What an incredible evening @samfendermusic. Can’t beat the Newcastle crowd, Sunderland where you at?” adding a crying laugh emoji at the end.
Newcastle fans absolutely loved the fact Kieran was at the gig, with one replying: “Kieran I just love you,” while referencing a well known nightspot in town, another of his followers, True Faith host an avid NUFC fan Emil Franchi responded: “Gan to The Cut on your crutches and I’ll get a taxi back to town.”
Thinking about Kieran’s injury, a third wrote: “Hope you weren't dancing on that ankle, and another quipped: “Tripp throwing the disses out left, right and far down the leagues.” Another fan took to Twitter on seeing Kieran at the gig, confessing: "Kieran Trippier just walked past me in the bogs at Sam Fender and I got stage fright."
The unmistakeable tall frame of defender Dan Burn was also spotted in the thick of the crowd at the Utilita Arena. After clocking Dan, NUFC fan Ryan Batey filmed him and captioned the video: "Big Dan Burn loving a bit of @samfendermusic tonight at the arena! Woaaaaah!"
Sam opened his set on Tuesday night to Will We Talk, after sticking with tradition and arriving on stage to Local Hero as flags heralded his welcome. Other songs in his set included second album title track and his biggest chart hit to date, Seventeen Going Under, Dead Boys, sing-along anthem Saturday and Spit of You.
