Dan Burn and eight deals Newcastle could still complete before transfer deadline

Eddie Howe has already stated Newcastle United will be "active" until the final few hours of the January transfer window after gutsy month so far by the new owners.

The head coach has added England international Kieran Trippier and New Zealand star Chris Wood to his ranks already with Bruno Guimarães coming in as the marquee arrival in the winter trading period at £33.5million.

Newcastle will also have to trim down the squad after finding themselves over subscribed meaning there could be some senior departures on deadline day.

In short, this is shaping up to be the most intriguing January deadline day since football changed its transfers rules back in 2003.

Dan Burn

United hope to tie up a £13million move for the Brighton defender on Monday.

Newcastle will surely have to move on one of their other centre-backs with Federico Fernandez, Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark and Fabian Schar already on board.

Hugo Ekitike

Reims have not been shy in communication on the possible sale of the 19-year-old, dubbed by some as the "Next Mbappe".

The Magpies table a bid but Reims turned it down citing that it included too many clauses.

Here's what Reims' president Jean-Pierre Caillot said: "Newcastle positioned themselves for a deal and we talked, but their proposal did not suit us as we don't necessarily want to sell him and that is why we set to the asking price (€40m) quite high.

"They did make us an offer worth €35m (£29m) in total, but it was with many bonuses and some of which were almost impossible to achieve - such as winning the Champions League. We want €30m fixed plus €10 million in reasonable bonuses."

Dele Alli

The Tottenham Hotspur man was thought to be Newcastle's back-up plan if the Magpies couldn't get Jesse Lingard.

After Manchester United cranked up their asking price to an eye watering £20m fee in total, Alli was offered again to Newcastle last week.

Spurs definitely want to loan him out in second half of the season with Everton now contenders to sign him having lured Frank Lampard to Goodison Park.

Fabian Schar

The Switzerland defender has been linked with Bordeaux in Ligue 1 throughout the January window but had his best game for a long time in the 1-0 win at Leeds to show he could be a real asset to Eddie Howe.

Having signed a contract extension last summer he is now down to the last six months of his current deal.

A cut-price cash sale is still feasible but surely he is the pick of the current centre-backs on board at St James' Park?

Dwight Gayle

It wouldn't be a transfer window without Dwight Gayle being linked with Fulham.

And once again the Cottagers are being linked with a late window move.

Gayle has been used sparingly by Howe this season and there is an argument that Newcastle have failed to make the most of a striker who does get goals when the service is right.

Still has two years left on his current deal but Howe facing a big decision as Gayle more than capable of being the main striker.

Jeff Hendrick

Yet to get a chance under Eddie Howe in truth.

But the arrival of Bruno Guimarães will make his battle for first-team action even more tricky.

Regardless of Newcastle's formation its hard to see where Hendrick fits in with Bruno, Jonjo Shelvey, Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock - not to mention the rejuvenated figure of Joelinton as a midfield enforcer.

A loan is possible but with two years to go on his current deal has the right to stay put in the squad, with or without a squad number.

Matty Longstaff

Returned from a loan spell at Aberdeen before Christmas and has trained with first-team squad.

The midfielder played 35 minutes of the friendly win over Al-Ittihad in a 2-1 win.

An offer from Oxford to loan Longstaff for the second half of the season has landed on Eddie Howe's desk.

But the Toon boss was unsure what his plan was for the player that netted that spectacular winner against Man United in 2019.

Elliot Anderson

Highly likely to be loaned out, has Luton and others interested.

Left frustrated 12 months ago when the Hatters tried to sign him for second half of the season but injuries in Steve Bruce's squad meant he stayed on.

Needs game-time to aid his development.

Freddie Woodman

Steve Bruce named four keepers in his squad to dent Woodman's loan move to AFC Bournemouth last summer.

Has been linked with Queens Park Rangers and the Cherries again this month.

With Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow fit again, and Mark Gillespie on board, it's hard to see Newcastle not taking either Woodman or Gillespie off the list.
