The Dallas Cowboys have been backed to trade Dak Prescott for Green Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers in order to make a run to the Super Bowl next season.
Last Sunday, the Cowboys crashed out of the postseason as they fell 19-12 to the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium. It means Dallas have continued their streak of failing to reach the NFC Championship Game, with their last appearance in the contest coming back in 1995.
The result in the revived classic rivalry between two iconic franchises means the Cowboys will have to wait to add a sixth championship. Since winning Super Bowl XXX in the 1995 season, the iconic franchise have had 12 playoff appearances but just five wins.
Dallas boasted a dominant defence heading into the postseason, but offensive struggles proved to be their undoing. Prescott threw for 206 yards and a touchdown, but he also threw two interceptions as the 49ers saw off the Cowboys.
Sports analyst Bill Simmons made a wild suggestion on his podcast as he claimed the Cowboys should shift Prescott in order to bring in Rodgers. The four-time MVP’s future in Green Bay - and the NFL - is uncertain, but Simmons believes America’s Team should move for Rodgers of he decides to continue his illustrious career.
“Is Dak for Rodgers crazy?” Simmons asked on the Bill Simmons Podcast. “Would you trade for Aaron Rodgers? … You wouldn’t want three years of Rodgers?”
Rodgers finished 2022 with 12 interceptions - the most he threw in a single campaign since 2008, his first year as a starter - while he also failed to post a single 300-yard passing game for the first time in his career. The 39-year-old signed a monster new contract last offseason to earn $50.27million per year through the 2026 season, when he will be 43 years of age.
Rodgers fuelled retirement speculation with non-committal answers in the post-game press conference after the heart-wrenching loss to the Detroit Lions in the regular season finale, but there is a growing belief around the league that the four-time MVP could be traded to a new team. On Saturday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter declared the Packers would indeed consider a trade if another team can afford Rodgers’ substantial salary.
“Make no mistake: Both sides are fully aware that a trade is a very real scenario this offseason for Aaron Rodgers,” Schefter said. “The Packers are expected to move on from certain players, which Aaron Rodgers probably will not like.
“The issue here will be the $110 million left on his contract, and which team could afford it. But there is a real possibility that at some point this offseason, Aaron Rodgers is going to be traded.”
However, a move to the Cowboys could prove difficult as the Packers reportedly want to trade him out of the NFC, while Prescott also possesses a no-trade clause in his deal. Green Bay also appear to have Rodgers’ successor on the roster as former first round pick Jordan Love bides his time.
