Pre-match hellos
Luis Diaz and Raphinha may not share a country or a club in their past, but the South American connection was strong with the way they said hello to one another before kick-off.
A warm embrace was far beyond a muted handshake. It was much the same between Daniel James and Mohamed Salah.
The jet-heeled forwards have never shared a dressing room, but the Egyptian was very warm and friendly in welcoming James to Anfield.
Raphinha inquest
As soon as Stuart Dallas saw the penalty awarded he slapped his legs in frustration. His look at Raphinha said it all. He should have never been in a situation where he had to handle Andy Robertson and Luis Diaz at once.
One of the theories behind Raphinha’s benching at the weekend was his lack of support for the right-back behind him. That was painfully evident as Robertson bore down on the Leeds United box with the Brazilian still ambling back on halfway.
Rodrigo went over and asked his own questions of the winger too.
Gelhardt welcomed home by his biggest fans
Joe Gelhardt had arguably the biggest applause of the evening from the visiting support. As he trotted out in his home city for a first-half warm-up, he was left in no doubt how the away fans felt seeing him.
Rapturous applause for one of the stories of the Leeds season. He clapped back with appreciation.
My enemy’s enemy is my friend
As the clock struck the hour mark, Leeds fans tried a spot of unity at Anfield.
“Stand up if you hate Man U, stand up if you hate Man U!”
Liverpool’s support was only too obliging to join in and have all four sides of the ground united in their hatred for the red lot between them on the M62.
Milner’s Leeds
As James Milner trotted out for his warm-up in the second half it was interesting to note how a distracted away support may react to him, as a homegrown talent done good etc.
Milner was strictly professional and barely went close enough to the away end to really trigger any kind of applause or recognition.
On his second time out down the touchline, in the 69th minute, he was on his own and went all the way to the corner flag.
“Milner, give us a wave, Milner, Milner, give us a wave!” The Thorp Arch academy product duly obliged and drew a decent cheer.
