Dakshina Kannada consumes 2.2 crore litres of liquor every year

MANGALURU: Guzzlers in the district are drinking like fish. On an average, the tipplers in the district guzzle around 2.2 crore litres of hard liquor every year, which is roughly 60,000 litres a day. When it comes to beer, the district on average consumes 1.4 crore litres.

According to data available from the excise department, the district, on an average in the last five years, consumes 25 lakh cartons of hard liquor. As per standard measurement rules of the department, each carton of hard liquor contains about 8.6 litres of liquor. Whereas, a carton of beer contains close to 7.8 litres of beer. On average, the district sells about 18 lakh cartons of beer per annum. This fiscal year’s district income, from the sale of liquor, is Rs 370 crore. Dakshina Kannada (DK) is one among the top districts in the state, in the consumption of alcohol.
