Dakar Fashion Week makes the ocean its catwalk

Dakar Fashion Week turned the Atlantic into a runway on Saturday, as models showed new designs from the decks of fishing boats off Senegal's capital.

They steadied themselves on ropes while waves lifted the small vessels, giving the event a raw and playful energy. The show marked the 23rd edition of the festival created by designer Adama Paris, who launched it in 2002 to spotlight African fashion.

This year's theme, the ocean as a stage, drew spectators onto boats as well. Dakar remains a leading force in African style, backed by a long textile tradition and a culture that fuels art across West Africa. Local designers say the event boosts visibility.

Many visitors, including industry workers returning from abroad, called the boat runway a bold first.
