Daizen Maeda on Southampton radar as Celtic star subject of transfer 'scouting mission'

Southampton will watch Daizen Maeda in the League Cup semi-final next week as they consider a transfer bid for another Celtic star, according to a report.

Maeda has been a key man for Ange Postecoglou this season despite some criticism of his finishing and decision-making and he was the only Celtic player named in the Japan squad, with Kyogo and Reo Hatate surprisingly left out. Southampton have been partial to a Celtic raid in the past with Victor Wanyama, Virgil van Dijk and Stuart Armstrong among the success stories. They have also expressed interest in Liel Abada in recent months,

And now Football Scotland report that Maeda is on their radar and they will travel north to watch him at Hampden against Kilmarnock next weekend. The Premier League strugglers are also keen on a move for Liel Abada and will likely get the chance to watch both as the Hoops look to reach the final of the Viaplay Cup.

Saints are thought to have a number of targets within the SPFL and will be attending various games in January as they look to recover from a dreadful first half of the season that sees them rooted to the bottom of the table without a win or even a point under new manager Nathan Jones. The Hoops meanwhile face Killie in the league on Saturday before next week's Hampden showdown.
