Daizen Maeda dedicates Japan win over Germany to fans at home as Celtic star hails shock comeback

Daizen Maeda has dedicated Japan’s win over germany to the fans that couldn't be in Qatar.

The Samurai Blue stunned the four-time World Cup winners as they came from behind to land a potentially devastating blow to Die Mannschaft’s hopes of making it out of Group E. They face Spain next, who hammered Costa Rica 7-0 and defeat could eliminate Hansi Flick’s side from the tournament.

Celtic striker Maeda thought he’d put Japan ahead in the first half, but his goal was ruled out for offside. Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring from the spot before Chelsea’s Kai Havertz was also denied by the assistant’s flag. Germany went in 1-0 up at the break and looked good to get off to a winning start. But the Japanese stepped it up after half-time and deservedly equalised through Ritsan Doan with 15 minutes left. The turnaround was completed when Takuma Asano lashed the winner into the roof of Manuel Neuer’s net with just eight minutes left on the clock.

Despite late German pressure, Japan held on to record a famous win. And Maeda, who made the squad while Parkhead pals Kyogo Furuhashi and Reo Hatate didn’t, had words for those back in his homeland. He said: "It was a great victory from a wonderful team. We had to deliver a win for all the Japanese people who couldn't be here.

"To come from behind and beat Germany...it is wonderful. Our performance in the first half, when we conceded just one goal, led to our comeback.

"We supported each other and stood together on the pitch. I was able to stand on the pitch thanks to the support of various people before this moment.

"I am truly grateful to be part of this team."
