Dad's emotional update as family flea Ukraine

A dad who travelled to Ukraine to reunite with his wife and child has given an emotional update to his TikTok followers.

Ian Umney, 28, from St Helens, quit his job as an English teacher and a courier to travel to Nikopol in south-eastern Ukraine to "save" Ukrainian wife Nelia and two-year-old son Jonathan.

He left the UK on Monday, February 28, and arrived in Ukraine on Tuesday, March 1, before spending time with his wife, son and parents-in-law.

On March 2, Ian and his family decided to make arrangements to flea Ukraine and left their home on Saturday, March 5.

Today [Monday, March 7] Ian updated his 217k TikTok followers to say his family were "safe" and had crossed the border into Moldova.

Holding back tears Ian said he couldn't help remembering what he was leaving behind in Ukraine.

He said: "We made it. We're in Moldova, we're over the border. It took a few hours but we are here at least so that's a good thing but I can't help remembering what I'm leaving behind.

"Yeah, I need to come back. I can't leave it like this. So yeah, we are safe we're out and in Moldova.

"I should be a lot happier, I just keep thinking about what's still there."

In a second video he spoke of how he would be flying his family back to the UK on Tuesday, March 7.

He said: "We are now in the heart of Romania at the train station, we have one hour to wait for the train and then we fly [to England] tomorrow morning.

"Crossing the borders was a bit of a s**tstorm we crossed into Moldova from Ukraine quite easily but then going from Moldova into Romania was a f*****g nightmare."
