Dad ran down his children's mother then blamed her for damage to car

A dad ran down his own children's mother and then blamed her for the damage to the car. Gordon Hemingray, 46, blasted his former partner calling her a 'spiteful b****' and accused her of damaging his wing mirror, reports Derbyshire Live.

Derby Crown Court heard that the defendant and the victim had been lovers and have two teenage daughters together. Abigail Joyce, prosecuting says they were both drug users and had been taking on the day of the incident on October 3 2020.

The prosecutor said: "She believed the defendant had taken items from her and when he parked up she emptied her belongings on the seat of the car. She got out and started looking for her tobacco, purse and phone and asked him if he had taken her tobacco and he said he had.

"He got angry, he went to drive off, the car door was open as she had been standing outside looking for items and as he drove off the door struck her, knocking her to the floor. He then did a three-point turn and drove back towards her, she had got on her feet from where she had been struck the first time.

"He drove at her and struck her with the front passenger side knocking her back down and causing her to bang her head. The defendant got out of the car but did not offer her any assistance, looked at the car and said 'you spiteful b****, look what you've done to my dad's wing mirror'."

Miss Joyce said despite her injuries, which included three broken bones to one of her feet, the "distraught and bleeding" victim managed to flee the scene to her mother's home. As well as sustaining a broken foot, the victim suffered swelling to a number of different parts of her body from the incident.

In court, Hemingray pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Will Bennett, his barrister, says the father has not had an easy life and wishes he could turn back time on the incident.

He said: "His life has not run smoothly, he's made a number of mistakes but the one thing he is very proud of is his two daughters. I was struck when I read his letter (to the judge) as it said very little about the victim in this case.

"But he wishes me to say in open court that he is sorry, he wishes he could turn the clock back but clearly he can't. It was dangerous stupidity rather than malice (and) tragically his sister died three days ago and he is not there to help his parents (with that)."

Judge Jonathan Bennett said: "You initially denied matters in your police interview saying all the blame was on the victim but you did plead guilty and avoid a trial. This incident involved two matters, one where you drove off when you knew she was (leaning into the car) when she was trying to get her property from it.

"When you drove off she was knocked to the ground, got up but you had turned the car around and you knew she was likely to want to try and stop you but you were more concerned with getting the car home to your father and you knocked her down again. You got out of the car and your concern was not with her but the potential damage to your father's car and you drove off leaving her."

For his crimes, Hemingray was jailed for two years and disqualified from driving for four years.
